Transcending Time and Love

Transcending Time & Love is a living mural project that embraces love and leadership for community over time. The once grey walls of SCC’s central courtyard are now dedicated to intelligence, social justice, freedom, human rights, overcoming adversity, and innovation. The initial installation of murals was a joint project highlighting efforts from Spokane Community College, Adams Elementary School 5th graders and faculty, local tribal leaders, nonprofit Karl Maxey Center, as well as other community partners.

The primary murals were painted by Adams Elementary English Language Development Specialist and teacher – Ayuko Momono. Ms. Momono has earned degrees from Osaka University, a top 5 ranked school in Japan, Gonzaga University, and Eastern Washington University, and has been an educator for over 20 years. Alongside SCC English as a Second Language Faculty Christina Mitma Momono, the vision for this project came together. By bridging learning environments between secondary, postsecondary, and community, Transcending Time & Love creates a living, breathing space for intergenerational inspiration, connection, and representation.

By connecting permanent murals of local, national, and global leaders with seasonal mini-murals created by students and community members, Transcending Time and Love creates space, literally and metaphysically, for students to reflect, connect, and express themselves in community with some of humanity’s most impactful figures. As a living project, each year, the mini-murals become a space for new creativity. Through this ongoing dynamic, the imagination of our communities become tangible, harnessing the past and paving the way for possibilities of the future.
