ESL Collection: About the ESL Collection

A guide that describes the ESL Collection in the SCC Library, and provides specific activities and teaching materials for interacting with it.

Welcome to This Guide on the ESL Books!

This guide was created in Summer 2025 by Faculty Librarian Greg Bem, in partnership with ESL Faculty Rabab Nemri-Weber and Zach Christman. This guide is designed to describe the books in the ESL Collection at the SCC Library, as well as house specific instruction materials that can be used by ESL Faculty and other instructors at the college for engaging students throughout the ESL curriculum. If you have questions or comments about the ESL Collection, please email greg.bem@scc.spokane.edu.

Suggest an ESL Resource

Is there an ESL resource that is missing from the ESL collection? Contact Faculty Librarian Greg Bem at greg.bem@scc.spokane.edu to discuss the possibility of adding it to the SCC library.

ESL Readers

The ESL readers are available for check-out from the SCC Library by any student or employee. The loan period is three weeks. There is a wide range of diverse topics across the collection. The ESL readers can be accessed via a display on the main floor of the SCC Library in Building 16. They are divided into three subject categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Biography. Each book is also defined in one of three reading levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, as determined by the various leveling systems used by the publisher and other leveling resources available online.
