Database Exploration (10 minutes)

Divide students into small groups, assigning each group one database (Credo Reference, Academic Search Complete, Gale Powersearch, or ProQuest). Each group will use the search string they developed to find one source related to educational barriers.

  • Instructions for Each Database:

    • Credo Reference: Search for a general overview of educational barriers. Discuss how the source defines or categorizes these barriers.
    • Academic Search Complete: Find a scholarly article on the educational barrier of your choice and narrow it using filters like peer-reviewed.
    • Gale PowerSearch: Locate a news or magazine article using the educational barrier of your choice and apply a source type filter.
    • ProQuest: Look for recent articles on “educational barriers AND remote learning” and filter by date to find the latest research.
  • Group Task:

    • Each group will spend 5 minutes exploring the database to locate a relevant source.
    • Have each group note down the title of their source and a key takeaway from it.

Quick Share and Discussion (5 minutes)

  • Group Share-Out: Each group quickly shares their source title and one interesting insight they found about educational barriers.
  • Reflection Question: Ask students to share one challenge they encountered in their search and how they resolved it (e.g., adjusting keywords or using filters).
