SCC Library, 5-Year Program Review: 2014-2019

Written by SCC Library faculty; submitted July 2019 to the SCC Library Dean and VP of Instruction

Principle 9: External Relations

Libraries engage the campus and broader community through multiple strategies in order to advocate, educate, and promote their value.

Performance Indicator 9.2
The Library communicates with the campus community regularly.

As evidenced in previous sections, the SCC library contributes to local, regional, and national organizations; some librarian projects and presentations have been mentioned in the district newsletter or announced to the Board of Trustees.

Examples of regular library communication with the campus:

  • Quarterly communication offering information literacy instruction to faculty
  • Quarterly communication to faculty about library reserves
  • Periodic email announcements highlighting new library resources
  • Announcements of library workshops and study nights
  • Occasional presentations to college stakeholders such as faculty (via the TLC and eLearning Academy), deans, and chairs
  • Partnerships with college services and initiatives to create book displays (e.g., Disability Student Services, 19th Amendment celebration)
  • Outreach from librarians to those within our liaison areas

Although SCC librarians are active participants in the college community, there has not been a coordinated effort for the purposes of advocacy and promoting our value to the college. While several projects outlined in this review serve to communicate library value, each is independently communicated. Creating a marketing plan would help coordinate our efforts to convey to students, faculty, and administrators the benefits and array of resources the library offers.

Recommendation

  • Create a plan to disseminate and discuss library impact across the college and beyond and market library services and resources to the college community.
