The Association of College and Research Libraries coordinates research projects that investigate the effects of information literacy instruction on student learning and achievement. See examples of this and other research here.
Orienting ourselves: Why are SCC Librarians creating these outcomes?
Research findings about teaching Information Literacy (IL) conclude that student achievement is improved through by library interventions. In order to teach progressively more complex IL concepts and skills to all students, SCC Librarians work collaboratively with discipline faculty to create sequenced IL student learning outcomes in several programs and courses including those we have identified as gateway courses. Via a strategic focus on IL skills and dispositions which build over time, our aim is to infuse Information Literacy into each student's college experience throughout their academic career at SCC
The gateway courses we choose correspond to educational pathways at the college, and they include research-related outcomes among their course learning outcomes. They include student orientation, general education, and discipline courses. By targeting these core courses which most students take, we aim to teach the widest possible breadth of students.
