The SCC Library and ENGL101 faculty partner each quarter to teach information literacy skills to students in Composition 1 courses. We gather feedback from students and teach & assess aspects of the following student learning outcomes which were developed in conjunction with ENGL101 faculty.
English 101 students will:
-
recognize the need for information based on their creation of a research question and/or thesis.
-
access the needed information using effective search strategies
-
evaluate sources critically in order to synthesize new information with existing and in order to expand/revise their initial thesis
-
integrate new information with existing ideas to accomplish a specific purpose such as writing an essay or adding information to group projects
-
understand MLA documentation style and procedures and successfully apply them in their own writing
[Objectives correspond to the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education]
In 2015, the Association of College and Research Libraries formed the Framework fo Information Literacy for Higher Education.
Since then, SCC librarians, in partnership with ENGL faculty, have begun incorporating aspects of The Framework into our instruction outcomes for ENGL 101.
The Flipped exercises for ENGL 101 are particularly informed by the following Frames:
- Searching as Strategic Exploration
- Authority is Constructed and Contextual
Student Learning Outcomes for the flipped class unit include:
- Students will explore 3 types of information sources: books, periodical articles, and Web sites.
- With the understanding that "searching for information is often nonlinear and iterative," students will apply learned research strategies to explore, find, evaluate, and use information sources.
